Bruthen District
Bruthen District sits at the intersection of the Tambo River valley, the Great Alpine Road, the Gippsland Lakes hinterland and the Alpine High Country, giving it an important role as a gateway between East Gippsland’s coast, river, lake and alpine environments.

The Bruthen District is located 20 minutes from Bairnsdale. It has a long and layered history, including deep and ongoing connections to the Gunaikurnai Traditional Owners and a legacy of European settlement as an important service centre and stopping point within East Gippsland.

The district is in a strategic location within East Gippsland, operating as a major throughfare for freight, residents and service delivery. It lies on the Great Alpine Road, connecting Gippsland Lakes and Bairnsdale with Omeo and the Victorian Alpine High Country, while also providing access east toward Buchan, Orbost and Mallacoota. This positioning establishes the district as an important transition point for industry, transport and emergency access, as well as for visitors moving between districts.

The area is characterised by highly productive agricultural land across the Tambo River floodplains, forested hills and extensive public land. The fertile flats below Bruthen were among the first areas cleared for agriculture in East Gippsland and continue to make a significant contribution to the regional economy.

Bruthen District comprises of the following localities:

Bruthen, Double Bridges, Fairy Dell, Mossiface and Wiseleigh.
