Prior to European settlement, the Bidwell people lived what is now the border area of Victoria and New South Wales, while the Krauatungalung people’s range included the Goongerah (Egg Rock) area.
The first European settlers came south from the Monaro to establish sheep and cattle runs in the 1830s, followed by timber harvesting. The area also has a gold and silver mining history which can be seen at various spots throughout the district. Small settlements were created to support this economic activity. The remnants of these can still be seen today, the Mayfair and Victoria Star mines are two examples. The townships of the Sub-District continue to farm the open grassy plains.
The natural environment is one of the most significant assets for the Errinundra to Snowy Sub-District community. The area is named for the many streams that trickle out of the springs of the Errinundra Plateau, shaping the valleys and eventually joining the Snowy River.
The sub-district was created given its remoteness from the Orbost township and its strong relationship with the NSW townships of Delegate and Bombala, which are the practical service towns for these communities.

Bendoc, Bonang, Cabanandra, Deddick Valley, Delegate River, Dellicknora, Goongerah, Haydens Bog, and Tubbut.

Errinundra to Snowy Sub-District Place Plan:
The community-led Errinundra to Snowy Sub‑District Community Plan was adopted in 2019 to guide the community for the next 10 years.
In due course, Council will work in partnership with the community to identify and prepare an accompanying document that aligns the Place Plan framework with the priorities and actions of the Community Plan.

Bendoc is a small, remote township set among forested high country near the New South Wales border.

Bonang is a dispersed settlement in an area of cleared agricultural land surrounded by forest and river systems.

Goongerah is the gateway to the Errinundra to Snowy Sub-District on the Bonang Road from Orbost. It is located on the Brodribb River, surrounded by forest dispersed with farmland.

Tubbut is a remote township, located on the Deddick River. Visitors can access the McKillops Bridge from Tubbut and through Deddick Valley.
