Sorting your waste before visiting Bairnsdale Landfill or a transfer station can save you money.
Loads separated into recyclables, green waste and general waste are often cheaper than mixed loads. Waste fees are based on the amount of space your waste takes up – not the size of your trailer.
• Separate recyclables, green waste and general waste before arriving. Mixed loads may be charged at the general waste rate.
• Many items can be disposed of for free.
• Pack your load so different waste types are easy for staff to identify.
• Compact your load to reduce the space it takes up.
• Secure your load with a net, tie-down straps or ropes. Unsecured loads can cause litter and may attract fines.
• Check what each site accepts before you visit.
• Ask site staff if you need help sorting your load.
The following items can be recycled for free at Bairnsdale Landfill and transfer stations:
• Scrap metal – tools, pipes, cookware and more
• General recycling
• Paper and cardboard
• Glass bottles and jars
• E-waste – items with batteries, plugs or cords
• Clothes and textiles
• Used motor oil
• Clean white polystyrene
• Unused paint
Green waste can be recycled at Bairnsdale Landfill and transfer stations.
Free green waste disposal is available during No-Fee November to help residents prepare for the bushfire season.
Free recycling options include:
• Paper and flattened cardboard
• Glass containers
• Steel cans
• Hard plastic containers
Recycling must be clean and free from contamination, with packaging and strapping removed.
Electronic waste (e-waste) can be recycled for free.
E-waste includes items with batteries, plugs or cords. It has been banned from landfill since 2019.
Gas bottles, steel, white goods, batteries and oil
The following items can be recycled or disposed of at Bairnsdale Landfill and transfer stations:
• Gas bottles
• Fridges, freezers and air conditioners
• Other white goods and steel items
• Alkaline, NiCAD and lead acid batteries
• Lithium batteries under 5 kg
• Used motor oil
• Clean white polystyrene
Lithium batteries over 5 kg cannot be accepted due to site restrictions.
Animal disposal is only available at Bairnsdale Landfill.
Clean textiles can be dropped off for free at Bairnsdale Landfill through Council’s textile recovery service.
Help reduce textile waste by:
• Looking after clothes so they last longer.
• Repairing, reusing and repurposing clothing.
