The Cann Valley district is comprised of a number of smaller settlements, serviced by the township of Cann River. Cann River is located at the junction of the Princes Highway and the Monaro Highway, which are key routes between Sydney and Melbourne and transport connections through to Canberra.
Cann Valley has a long and rich First Nation history prior to European settlement. The district forms part of a broader cultural landscape shaped by river systems and valleys that supported Aboriginal communities, movement and connection. The Cann River corridor and its tributaries, were part of networks linking inland East Gippsland, the NSW Monaro tablelands and the southeast coast. These pathways supported travel, trade, ceremony and kinship connections between First Nation communities including Bidwell, Monero and Yuin communities.
European settlement was from the 1870s with the clearing of land for agriculture. Cattle grazing was established on the fertile floodplains of the Buldah, Combienbar, Tonghi, Bemm and Cann River flats, shaping the rural landscape and leading to the development of permanent settlements across the district.
Today, the Cann Valley district is also known for its proximity to several national parks providing access to the ancient rainforests of the far east, fishing, bushwalking and camping. To the south of Cann River is Tamboon Inlet and Point Hicks including the historic 1890 lighthouse which is on the site of the first Australian east coast land to be sighted by Europeans.

Cann Valley District Place Plan:
The community-led Cann Valley District Community Plan was adopted in 2019 to guide the community for the next 10 years. The community reviewed the plan in 2025, with the development of a Five-Year Action Plan.
In due course, Council will work in partnership with the community to identify and prepare an accompanying document that aligns the Council led Place Plan framework with the priorities and actions of the Community Action Plan.

Located at the junction of the Princes Highway and the Monaro Highway, it provides an important transport connection. The township includes essential services and community facilities.
