Road renaming proposal – View Street LAKES ENTRANCE to ‘Magnolia View’
Date of Issue:
January 12, 2026

Council is proposing to rename View Street LAKES ENTRANCE to ‘Magnolia View’.

The location and extent of the road proposed to be renamed is shown below:

The extended community is invited to provide feedback on this proposal.

Background

We have received several reports that a duplicate road name and 18 duplicate address numbers between View Streets, Lakes Entrance and Lake Tyers Beach have caused confusion for mail and delivery services, and other organisations. The two roads are within 7.7 kilometers of each other and share the same postcode. This name duplication has the potential to cause confusion and delays for emergency responders.

Although it has existed for longer and services more properties, renaming View Street, Lakes Entrance will resolve the name duplication issue and a compliant road type will be allocated. The road is a cul-de-sac (court type) not an open-ended road (street type).

  • Principle ‘D’ of the Naming Rules for Places in Victoria – Statutory requirements for naming roads, features, and localities – 2022 – To protect or communities names must not duplicate another name within a locality or specified distance.

The new road name recognises the naming theme of the immediate area, where many of the roads are named in commemoration of vessels that were lost at sea (Bass Strait) or on the Gippsland Lakes.

The Magnolia was a regular trader between Melbourne and Gippsland ports. On its final voyage carrying stone for the new entrance, the Magnolia left Melbourne for the Gippsland Lakes on 14 July 1887 under the command of Captain Peter Anderson and a crew of three; but it never arrived.

The above proposed road renaming adheres to the Naming rules for places in Victoria– Statutory requirements for naming roads, features and localities 2022 (the Naming Rules) and Australian New Zealand Standard for rural and urban addressing AS/NZS 4819:2011.
