Road naming proposal – Unnamed Lane PAYNESVILLE to ‘Stanway Lane’

Council is proposing to name an unnamed laneway at Paynesville “Stanway Lane’.

The extended community is invited to provide feedback on this proposal.

Background

The laneway extends between King Street and Victoria Street, providing rear access for properties facing Langford Parade and Wellington Street.

Naming this laneway is in accordance with Section 3.3 of the Naming Rules for Places in Victoria – Statutory requirements for naming roads features, and localities – 2022 (Naming Rules).

“Section 3.3 – ‘All roads, whether they are public or private, should be named and registered in VICNAMES and Vicmap. This facilitates accurate addressing and location identification across Victoria. Therefore, any land course navigable by vehicle or foot should be officially named according to the naming rules”.

James and Margaret Stanway opened the town butcher shop at the southeastern corner of Wellington Street and Esplanade, in the late 1880’s. As well as running their business, James and Margaret raised 15 children in the small Paynesville community. Generations of the family have been involved in local sporting clubs, charity organisations, and one is recognised on the Bairnsdale Regional Hospital Honor Board.

The above proposed road renaming adheres to the Naming Rules and the Australian and New Zealand Standard for rural and urban addressing AS/NZS 4819:2011.
