Trail naming proposal - Hummocks Walk, Lakes Entrance

Trail naming proposal – Walking Trail from the Southern / Ocean end of the Cunninghame Arm Footbridge to the Eastern Pier of the Entrance to the Gippsland Lakes, LAKES ENTRANCE ‘Hummocks Walk’.

To allow for the allocation of logical property and feature addressing, Council is proposing to name the walking trail that leads from the southern end of the Cunninghame Arm footbridge to the eastern pier of the entrance to the Gippsland Lakes ‘Hummocks Walk’.

The location and extent of the trail proposed to be renamed is shown below:

Background

Ambulance Victoria have alerted Council to the lack of registered track names and logical address allocations for properties and features at the Hummocks / New Works area LAKES ENTRANCE. This issue has cause confusion and impacted on response times during emergency situations.

Recently emergency responders have been dispatched to locations along the Esplanade while trying to respond to emergency situations along this trail. Naming the trail and allocating logical addressing to properties and features will assist 000 Emergency operators to accurately locate distress callers, and dispatch responders to the correct location.

Council has an obligation in accordance with the Local Government Act 1989, the Geographic Place Names Act 1998 and associated guidelines to ensure public safety and responsible service delivery to the community.  Where Council identifies the potential for confusion and risk to public safety, Council must take steps to rectify the situation.

The above proposed trail naming adheres to the Naming rules for places in Victoria– Statutory requirements for naming roads, features and localities 2022 (the Naming Rules) and Australian New Zealand Standards for rural and urban addressing AS/NZS 4819:2011.

Submissions

This proposal complies with the Naming rules for places in Victoria – Statutory requirements for naming roads, features and localities – 2022.

Affected property owners/ratepayers/occupiers are being consulted regarding the naming proposal and Council will advertise the results of this consultation in due course.

Community members are invited to respond to this proposal before its formal consideration by the Registrar of Geographic Names Victoria.
