Spring is our busy season for mowing
Date of Issue:
October 9, 2025

Spring is in full swing and with it comes fast-growing grass, so our mowing teams and contractors are ramping up mowing efforts.

Our crews are hard at work mowing the equivalent of 175 MCGs every couple of weeks to keep parks, gardens and sports grounds safe, green and ready to enjoy. We prioritise key public spaces, so while you might see some areas growing quickly, we’re steadily working through the shire to keep things looking their best.

At the same time, we’re stepping up fire season preparations.

Residents will see an increase in mowing in the lead-up to, and throughout, the fire season, including roadside slashing and vegetation management along 6,000 kilometres of roadsides to help reduce fire risk.

These works are an essential part of keeping our communities safe.

During fire slashing, variable speed limits may be enforced, and motorists may experience small delays as works are completed.

Slashing is different from normal mowing that you may see in some of our parks and roadsides. It is a broad-scale cutting of grass and vegetation using heavy machinery.

Slashing occurs once or twice a year after the spring growth. In some instances, slashed areas may not appear neatly mown, however, the primary aim of slashing is to reduce the rate of spread and intensity of fire should it occur and to maintain traffic safety.

Wet ground can make it difficult to access some areas which can slow down mowing and slashing work.
