Each year, we honour the courage, service and sacrifice of the Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women – past and present – who have served in times of war, conflict and peacekeeping. We also acknowledge their families and communities, who have carried the quiet weight of that service alongside them.
Here in East Gippsland, the spirit of Anzac continues to be felt through the stories of local veterans, the solemnity of our dawn services, and the values of resilience, mateship and service that remain deeply woven into our community.
At a time when conflict continues in parts of the world, including the Middle East, this day of remembrance takes on an added poignancy. It reminds us of the human cost of conflict and the importance of striving for peace, and of supporting those who serve, as well as the communities affected.
To our teams and individuals across Council who contribute to the upkeep of cenotaphs, avenues of honour and memorials through their work with our organisation, or volunteer their own time to support services, groups and veterans, it does not go unnoticed.
On behalf of Council, I thank all those who serve and have served. We honour their legacy not only in remembrance, but in how we care for one another, strengthen our communities, and work towards a more peaceful future.
To those who attended a dawn service or plan to attend a morning service today, thank you for helping keep this important tradition alive.
Lest we forget.
