Construction of a new spillway and bridge in Livingstone Park in Omeo will begin on Monday 20 April, marking a significant step forward in the park’s ongoing revitalisation.

The project, being undertaken by East Gippsland contractor Jarvis Norwood Construction, forms part of broader efforts to improve flood resilience, protect natural and cultural assets, and create a safer, more accessible and greener space for the Omeo community. Completion is anticipated before the end of June.

Chief Executive Officer Fiona Weigall said the project would deliver lasting benefits for the community while strengthening the park’s resilience to future flood events.

“The new rock spillway has been carefully designed to slow and safely direct water during floods, reduce erosion and blend naturally into the landscape,” Ms Weigall said.

“The addition of a new bridge will also improve safe access across the creek, particularly during high-water events, helping ensure the park remains accessible for locals and visitors. Council will continue to review opportunities to ensure this area is accessible and available for community to enjoy."

The existing spillway, which is at the end of its useful life, will be replaced with a rock spillway – an angled rock chute that improves water flow management while reducing environmental impact.

Livingstone Park and the mountain bike park trailhead will remain accessible during construction with diversions for pedestrians and cyclists. Carparking will remain available during the works.

Council would like to acknowledge the support of the Victorian and Commonwealth Governments as part of the overall revitalisation of Livingstone Park.

Ms Weigall said it was encouraging to see the project progressing, following detailed planning and pre-construction work.

“This is an important investment in Omeo’s future, delivering practical infrastructure improvements while enhancing the natural character of Livingstone Park,” she said.
