The Twin Rivers District is home to significant wetlands and the Tambo and Nicholson Rivers, which played a central role in the human history of the Twin Rivers District. The rivers played a critical role in the growth of this area, providing a means of transportation for the development of various industries. In 1878 tracks started to be cleared, and in the 1880s timber barges carried logs to sawmills on the wharves at Johnsonville.
The district is home to the Brabralung people, one of the five major clans of the Gunaikurnai nation, who have been custodians of the waterways in the Gippsland region for tens of thousands of years. The waterways and their floodplains were, and remain, important to Aboriginal people, providing food, materials for implements such as bark for canoes, and meeting places.
Today, the semi-rural landscape, recreational fishing and proximity to services is attractive to new residents and development, with the townships offering complimentary facilities including recreation reserves, public hall, schools and kindergarten as well as boating/ rowing facilities on both rivers.

Twin Rivers District Place Plan:
The community-led Twin Rivers District Community Plan was adopted in 2019 to guide the community for the next 10 years. In due course, Council will work in partnership with the community to identify and prepare an accompanying document that aligns the Place Plan framework with the priorities and actions of the Action Plan.

Nicholson is the largest township in the district, located on the Princes Highway and the banks of the Nicholson River. The area is also known for the river crossing point of the East Gippsland Rail Trail via a bridge dedicated to walking and cycling.

Tambo Upper is a rural township with a dispersed population. It sits on the Swan Reach Road which connects the Princess Highway with the Great Alpine Road.
