Our Commitment

Council is committed to promoting gender equity by:

  • Considering the different needs, experiences and impacts on people of all genders and identities
  • Addressing systemic barriers and inequality where they exist
  • Challenging stereotypes and promoting inclusive and respectful practices
  • Applying a gender lens to policies, plans, services and projects

This commitment applies across our role in the community, our services, and our workplace practices.

Gender Equity in Decision Making

Gender equity is embedded into Council’s governance and operational processes. This includes:

  • Applying equity and gender impact considerations when developing or reviewing policies, plans and projects
  • Using data and evidence to understand how different groups may be affected by decisions
  • Ensuring inclusive language and practices are reflected in Council documents and services
  • Supporting staff capability through training and resources

These approaches help ensure Council decisions are fair, informed and responsive to the diverse community we serve.

Legislative and Strategic Alignment

In line with the Gender Equality Act 2020, Council is a defined entity and has a Gender Equality Action Plan (GEAP). The GEAP outlines actions to improve gender equality within Council’s workplace and across service delivery, and progress is reported to the Gender Equality Commission.

Gender equity commitments are also reflected in Council’s long term planning and strategic documents, reinforcing that this work is an ongoing and integral part of what Council does.
