Building Permits

We do not issue Building Permits, these are issued through Private Building Surveyors.
Almost all building works require a building permit. Some works also require a planning permit.

Most proposed building work must have a building permit prior to construction. A building permit is a document issued by a building surveyor that allows building work to occur. The owner of the property where building work is proposed is responsible for obtaining a building permit.

In East Gippsland, private building surveyors issue these permits but will only do so once they are satisfied that sufficient details and documentation have been submitted by the applicant.

Below is a list of some local professional consultants who may be able to assist you in acquiring a building permit.

There are some minor types of building work that are exempt from a building permit.

In certain instances, the exemptions remove the necessity to obtain a building permit but still require the owner to make sure the building work complies with the regulations.

For a full list of building works exempt from a building permit please see Building Regulations 2018 Schedule 3.

Further explanation regarding the schedule can be found in the VBA building practice note.
