The Metung District is located among the sheltered shorelines and peninsulas at the eastern end of Lake King. The area supports diverse coastal and marine ecosystems, including wetlands, seagrass beds and important habitat for birdlife and aquatic species.
The district lies on the Country of the Gunaikurnai clans Tatungalung and Brabralung, whose connection to the Gippsland Lakes and surrounding waterways extends back tens of thousands of years. Lakes, rivers and coastal margins were central to cultural life, supporting fishing, gathering and seasonal movement across Country.
Today, Traditional Owners continue to play an important role in caring for land and waters across the region.
Permanent European settlements were established by the 1880s, with places such as Nyerimilang Heritage Park reflecting this history. Today, the district’s jetties, foreshores, walking tracks, bushland and boating facilities continue to shape daily life and visitor experiences, contributing to its distinctive coastal character.
Metung District comprises of the following localities:
Boole Poole, Metung, Mosquito Point, Nungurner, Nyerimilang, Tambo Bay, and Tambo Bluff.

Metung is located on a thin peninsula on the shores of Lake King and Bancroft Bay. It is almost entirely surrounded by water and is a popular boating area and a favourite destination for holidaymakers.
