Volunteers are the change makers of our community
Date of Issue:
May 2, 2023

National Volunteer Week will be celebrated across East Gippsland from 15-21 May acknowledging the important role volunteers play in our community.

Volunteers help build our community and make it a better place for everyone. Volunteers are the change makers, they put in an incredible amount of hard work in keeping our community connected and stronger.

Mayor Cr Mark Reeves said we have hundreds of volunteers who devote countless hours to our community.

“Volunteers range from individuals and groups running community events, sporting clubs, social and service clubs, fundraise for equipment, help those less fortunate, care for our environment and we want to say a huge thank you,” Cr Reeves said.

To celebrate National Volunteer Week, East Gippsland Shire Council is hosting complimentary events throughout the region to recognise every volunteer for everything that they do for the community and a chance to say thank you.

Council invites all volunteers from all walks of life to join us for a celebration at the following locations:

Wednesday 17 May at 7.30 am – Johnsonville Hall for breakfast

Thursday 18 May at 10.00 am – Paynesville Men’s Shed for morning tea

Friday 19 May at 10.00 am – Marlo CFA and Coast Guard Shed for morning tea

Everyone is encouraged to spread the word within the community, volunteer groups, clubs and organisations, to join in the celebrations and to thank all of our wonderful volunteers.

East Gippsland Volunteer Honour Roll

Registrations are still open for the East Gippsland Volunteer Honour Roll, a Council initiative launched last year with over 117 volunteers nominated with a combined 1,565 years of service.

"The Volunteer Honour Roll is a permanent list of names recognising those in our communities who give up so much of their time to support the community,” Cr Reeves said.

“While volunteers don’t look for praise, we would like to use National Volunteer Week to let all volunteers know they are appreciated. If you or know of someone who is deserving of a pat on the back for their efforts in the community, nominate them now and we’ll ensure they are included on the roll.”
