After 10 months of working with the Omeo District community, East Gippsland Shire Council has released a draft Omeo District Place Plan for a final round of public feedback.
The draft brings together the community's vision for the district with an outline of Council's work that helps to achieve this vision. It has been shaped by extensive engagement, including 645 visits to the Your Say project page, 85 surveys, discussions with community groups, workshops in Benambra, Omeo, Swifts Creek and Tambo Crossing, as well as an online session.
Mayor Cr Jodie Ashworth said the extensive engagement highlighted one clear message.
"The Omeo District community wants to be able to live and work locally across their whole life – from raising a family, to accessing education and employment, to retiring in the area if they choose to," Cr Ashworth said.
"Place plans like this are important documents. They allow each district to hold its own values at the core of how we work and plan for its future”.
"This draft reflects what we heard clearly and consistently from the Omeo District community, and I'd encourage everyone to take this opportunity to have their say before it's finalised."
The draft focuses on the priorities of health services, education, housing, employment, social connection, environmental care and emergency preparedness; and highlights the need for all stakeholders to work together to work toward these priorities.
It's the first in a series of district-level plans being rolled out progressively across East Gippsland, each grounded in local research, community profiling and district mapping.
