Visitors to the Dinni Birraark Walk at Newlands Arm will soon enjoy a safer and more accessible trail, with
upgrades planned to improve the popular recreational and cultural heritage route while protecting the
surrounding environment.
East Gippsland Shire Council, working with the Paynesville Landcare Group, will undertake works to
upgrade and define a 372-metre section of the trail between Backwater Court and Kellina Court in
Paynesville’s west. Rock beaching will also be installed along the water’s edge in the first section to help
stabilise the shoreline. These upgrades are aimed at improving usability and creating a more sustainable,
user-friendly trail for residents and visitors.
During the works, construction activities and machinery will operate along sections of the foreshore.
Temporary access restrictions will apply within the active work areas.
To support the upcoming works, Council has asked that all boats, kayaks and other watercraft currently
stored along the foreshore near Backwater Court are removed by Monday 25 May 2026.
Mayor Cr Jodie Ashworth said the project reflects Council’s commitment to maintaining important community
infrastructure while protecting the natural environment.
“This project is about creating a safer and more enjoyable walking experience while also protecting the
foreshore from ongoing erosion – it’s a practical investment in the future of this much-loved local trail,” Cr
Ashworth said.
“These improvements move us closer to the long-term vision of better connecting Paynesville and Newlands
Arm – supporting recreation, tourism and everyday use by the community.”
Named for the Dinni Birraark – Gunaikurnai song-makers and spiritual knowledge holders – the walking trail
connects land, memory and story. The name was gifted by the Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal
Corporation and reflects the cultural significance of the landscape.
