Road safety upgrades underway in Lakes Entrance
Date of Issue:
April 24, 2026

Two major road safety projects are now underway in Lakes Entrance, with East Gippsland Shire Council getting to work on improvements to traffic flow and pedestrian safety on Marine Parade and Church Street.

Works on Stage 2 of the Marine Parade upgrade have begun at the Barkes Avenue intersection, while construction on the Church Street safety project is also moving forward, with site preparation now underway ahead of major works through to August.

Mayor Cr Jodie Ashworth said the projects marked an important step from planning into delivery.

“It’s great to see these projects moving from planning into construction, where the community will start to see the benefits,” Cr Ashworth said.

“With works now underway on both Marine Parade and Church Street, we’re focused on improving safety, slowing traffic in key areas, and making it easier for people to move around on foot.

“These are practical upgrades that will make a real difference for students, older residents and the many visitors who come through Lakes Entrance, particularly during busy periods.”

The Church Street project, funded by the Transport Accident Commission and delivered by Fulton Hogan, will include two raised pedestrian crossings near Bulmer and Mechanics streets; improved street lighting and flashing crossing lights at Mechanics Street; and changes to existing speed humps to prioritise pedestrian movement.

Over the coming fortnight, crews will finalise construction scheduling and complete site preparation, with works expected to continue through to August 2026, weather permitting.

Stage 2 of the Marine Parade upgrade, being delivered by local contractor CAL Civil, is expected to take around 12 weeks and focuses on the Barkes Avenue T-intersection.

Works include a full reconstruction of the road surface, improved drainage, and new kerb and channel.

Marine Parade will remain open during construction; however, some lane closures and minor delays are expected. The Barkes Avenue intersection will be closed for most of the works, with detours in place. Council and contractors will work closely with residents to maintain access to properties wherever possible.

“We appreciate the community’s patience during construction,” Cr Ashworth said. “These works are essential to delivering a safer and more reliable road network.”

The Marine Parade upgrade is jointly funded by the Australian Government through the Victorian Infrastructure Investment Program and Council.
