The East Gippsland community now has access to free sanitary items at the Bairnsdale and Paynesville Libraries, thanks to a program based on the premise that pads and tampons are not a luxury, but a necessity.
The program includes the installation of around 1,500 free vending machines across up to 700 public places, each stocked with packets of pads and tampons in a range of pack sizes, including all of our libraries.
Locally, free sanitary products are already available at Bairnsdale and Paynesville Libraries, with Mallacoota and Omeo Libraries to follow in October, and Lakes Entrance and Orbost Libraries from February.
East Gippsland Shire Council Mayor Cr John White said the initiative reflects Council’s commitment to practical solutions.
“We’re proud to join the statewide program delivering free pads and tampons. Access to basic necessities like these can make an immediate difference in people’s lives,” John said.
“With the installation of these vending machines, we are supporting dignity for everyone who uses our libraries.”
This initiative is part of a broader statewide rollout in partnership with councils, making period products available in libraries, hospitals, TAFEs, sporting venues, museums and markets.
Bairnsdale Library is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9.00 am to 6.00 pm, Thursday from 9.00 am to 9.00 pm, and Saturday from 9.00 am to 12.00 pm. Paynesville Library is open Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.
