It’s official – East Gippsland boasts one of Victoria’s most outstanding tourist destinations, with Lakes Entrance awarded a silver medal behind state winner Ballarat at the

inaugural Top Tourism Town Awards announced Wednesday, July 14.

The awards, hosted by the Victoria Tourism Industry Council (VTIC) at Bendigo Art Gallery, saw the East Gippsland town beat out all but one of the 22 most popular tourist spots across the state.

Paynesville and Mallacoota also made the final 22, vying for best small town. That award went to Port Fairy.

Submissions for each town were put forward by Council’s Visitor Information Centres team, in collaboration with East Gippsland Marketing Inc. and the Business and Tourism Associations of Lakes Entrance, Paynesville and Mallacoota.

Mayor Mendy Urie said she was delighted to see all three of the East Gippsland towns recognised as being among the state’s best tourism destinations.

“Tourists across the nation have long known that Lakes Entrance is an unbeatable holiday spot. I’m so pleased to see this East Gippsland jewel given an accolade,” Cr Urie said.

“Lakes Entrance and surrounds has it all – stunning beaches, pristine lakes, tracks and trails, fabulous seafood, wineries and breweries, and great weather that invites you to enjoy a day outside,” Cr Urie said.

Voting was conducted by judges selected by VTIC and the general public, with more than 23,000 Victorians casting votes for the finalists.

“There’s no better time to discover a new corner of our own state, so we welcome new visitors to all of our tourist-friendly towns. You’ll love the East Gippsland experience,” Cr Urie said.

Just in time for the Top Tourism Town Awards, Council and EGMI have launched a showcase of all that the region has to offer visitors and locals. To plan your next East Gippsland travel adventure, head to the new tourism website visiteastgippsland.com.au.
