East Gippsland Shire Council has welcomed the announcement by The Nationals this morning to back a $120 million investment towards a new emergency department at Bairnsdale Hospital.
Chief Executive Officer Fiona Weigall said Council has advocated strongly for the project with all political parties and regional stakeholders.
“We welcome this commitment from the Coalition to a new emergency department and additional beds, which is a key priority for Council and the community," Ms Weigall said.
“We look forward to seeing the funding matched by other parties – and delivered – to help meet the region’s growing healthcare needs."
East Gippsland health services leaders were joined by Council CEO Fional Weigall, Gippsland East MP Tim Bull, Gippsland East candidate Gemma Rendell, Member for Eastern Region Melina Bath MP, and Shadow Health Minister Georgie Crozier MP for the announcement of the $120m to fund stage one of a new Bairnsdale hospital that will more than double Emergency Department treatment spaces, double the ambulance bays and provide an uplift in hospital beds to meet current and future need.
