Help shape the future of East Gippsland’s open spaces
Date of Issue:
September 18, 2025

East Gippsland Shire Council is inviting the community to have its say on the draft Open Space Strategy – a long-term plan to protect and improve the parks, reserves, waterways and community spaces that shape our region’s lifestyle.

Public open space is vital to community wellbeing. It provides places for recreation, social connection, cultural events, and appreciation of the environment. From playgrounds and sports grounds to trails and waterways, open space enhance the characters of our towns and contribute to East Gippsland’s unique identity.

Mayor Cr John White said open space is one of the community’s greatest shared assets.

“Open spaces are where we come together, play sport, relax and connect with nature. They are at the heart of our community identity,” John said. “Your feedback is essential in shaping this vision. Whether you’re passionate about green spaces or community wellbeing, we encourage you to take a look and share your thoughts.”

The draft strategy sets out a framework for how Council will plan, manage and invest in open spaces. It will guide decision-making, ensuring resources are used responsibly while meeting the needs of a growing and diverse community.

The strategy has been shaped by stakeholder and community input gathered in 2024 through the Open Space Strategy Issues and Engagement process, alongside consolidated historic research, analysis and consultation.

Key priorities identified include:

Improving existing facilities and updating playgrounds

Ensuring consistent quality and maintenance across open spaces

Strengthening connections between parks, reserves and trails

The draft Open Space Strategy is now available for public comment until 12 pm on Wednesday 1 October 2025.

Feedback can be provided online at yoursay.eastgippsland.vic.gov.au/open-space-strategy or in hard copy at Council’s Customer Service Centres.
