East Gippsland Shire Council has introduced a new, simplified Goods on Footpath permit fee structure as renewals are being issued, helping support local businesses while maintaining safe, accessible and vibrant town centres.

The revised fee structure, introduced as part of the 2026/27 Budget, replaces the previous per metre fee with a tiered pricing model based on the amount of approved footpath space used by each business. The new approach provides greater flexibility and is expected to reduce costs for many businesses.

Mayor Cr Jodie Ashworth said the revised permit structure reflects Council's commitment to supporting local businesses while ensuring public spaces remain safe and accessible for everyone.

"We know our local cafés, restaurants and retailers play an important role in creating welcoming, vibrant town centres and supporting the local economy," Cr Ashworth said.

"We also understand that running a business in the current economic climate is challenging, with many businesses continuing to face rising costs and financial pressures. That's why we've introduced a fairer and more flexible fee structure that reflects the amount of footpath space a business uses, giving operators greater choice and helping reduce costs for many businesses."

"These changes were informed by community feedback during the development of this year's Budget and demonstrate our commitment to supporting local businesses while continuing to ensure our public spaces are safe, accessible and welcoming for everyone."

Businesses that may not have renewed their Goods on Footpath permit in previous years are encouraged to get in touch. We’re committed to working collaboratively with business owners to ensure the correct permits are in place and make the renewal or application process as straightforward as possible.

Some activities involving the use of Council-managed land or road reserves may continue to require a separate Trading Permit where they fall outside the scope of a Goods on Footpath permit.
