Road naming proposal – Karbeethong Avenue, Mallacoota to ‘Helena Drive’
Date of Issue:
May 29, 2026

Council is proposing to rename Karbeethong Avenue, Mallacoota. Our name suggestion is ‘Helena Drive’.

The location and extent of the road proposed to be renamed is shown below and the community is invited to provide feedback on this proposal.

Background

Road name and property address duplication between Karbeethong Road and Karbeethong Avenue, Mallacoota has caused confusion and delays for emergency service responders. Triple Zero EmergencyVictoria have alerted us to the safety issues these road names are causing and in consultation with them and the Office of Geographic Names Victoria, it has been determined that renaming one of these roads is necessary to resolve this issue.

After considering the potential impacts on affected owners, residents, and the broader community, it has been determined that renaming Karbeethong Avenue offers the most effective solution to the current duplication issue.

Council is suggesting the new name ‘Helena Drive’ in commemoration of Helena Margaret Buckland.

Both Karbeethong Avenue and Karbeethong Road were originally named in recognition of the historic farming property ‘Karbeethong’ which was located nearby. The property was owned by Frederick and Helena Buckland. As part of this renaming proposal, we suggest honouring Helena Buckland (nee Begley) for her significance to the area.

Helena Margaret Buckland together with her husband Frederick, established and worked the original Karbeethong property near where the road is now located. While raising nine children, Helena played a pivotal role in the success of the farm – supporting Frederick in its operation and later managing the entire family enterprise following his passing.

Because the duplication has seriously affected emergency response times, Council is required to rename the road to resolve this issue. We recognise this change may be disappointing and may create inconvenience for some residents and property owners. Your feedback will help inform the final proposal and support an outcome that is appropriate for the area and minimises impacts for those affected.
