Volunteer spotlight - Reading for Kids
Date of Issue:
May 21, 2026

As we celebrate National Volunteer Week and this year’s theme, “Your Year to Volunteer,” Mayor Cr Jodie Ashworth acknowledged the incredible contribution of Reading for Kids and Teens Gippsland and the volunteers who help foster a love of reading across East Gippsland.

Mayor Ashworth said, “Through their support of our libraries, more than 80 book review videos have been created this year alone, encouraging children and families to discover and borrow books from our libraries. Over the past four years, the group has produced more than 400 videos promoting reading and literacy across our region.

For four of the past five years, the group has also helped ensure every primary-aged child across East Gippsland receives a Children’s Book Council of Australia bookmark featuring the 36 shortlisted books.

One of those shortlisted titles is The Thing About Christmas by Jo Dabrowski and illustrator Briony Stewart – a warm and joyful picture book capturing the wonder of Christmas through a child’s eyes.

I encourage families to visit their local libraries to explore the CBCA shortlisted books and continue celebrating stories, literacy and community connection.”
