Storm assessments help identify ongoing support needs

Council has supported affected residents and businesses following the severe rainfall and localised flooding that occurred on 2-3 October.

East Gippsland Shire Council has supported affected residents and businesses through relief and recovery activities following the severe rainfall and localised flooding that occurred on 2 and 3 October.

As part of this work, Council undertook secondary impact assessments to better understand how the event affected households, businesses and community facilities, and identify support needs.

VICSES responded to 57 requests for assistance, while Council received more than 100 enquiries and met with about 20 households at two community recovery drop-in sessions on Tuesday 6 October.

Information gathered through these enquiries, assessments and community conversations has helped Council build a clearer picture of the impacts and coordinate support where needed. Some residents and businesses have also been referred to specialist support agencies.

Many residents have undertaken their own clean-up and recovery efforts. Council has assisted with information, referrals and waste support, while roads staff and contractors have assessed damage requiring remedial works.

Council thanks everyone who has helped support the community, from neighbours helping neighbours to emergency services personnel, volunteers and support agencies working alongside Council.

While the initial assessment and recovery activities have been completed, Council remains available to assist residents and businesses affected by the storm and flooding. If you need information, support or advice about available services, please contact Council on 03 5153 9500.

The East Gippsland Emergency Dashboard also provides centralised access to emergency information and resources to help residents prepare for and respond to emergencies. Visit emergencydashboard.eastgippsland.vic.gov.au.
