Tracey Ah Sam has been named East Gippsland’s Citizen of the Year for 2026 in recognition of her outstanding service and more than three decades of dedication to the Omeo community.

Since moving to Omeo in the early 1990s, Tracey has been a tireless volunteer, leader, organiser, and advocate, quietly shaping the strength and sustainability of the community and the lives of the people within it. Her contribution is woven deeply into local life, with a lasting impact across sport, health, tourism, and community wellbeing.

Mayor Jodie Ashworth said Tracey’s impact on Omeo could be felt right across the community.

“Tracey is the kind of person who simply gets on with the job of supporting others, often behind the scenes and without seeking recognition,” Mayor Ashworth said.

“For more than 30 years she has given her time, skills, and energy to ensure Omeo remains a strong, connected, and resilient community. Her leadership, generosity, and genuine care for people make her a truly deserving Citizen of the Year.”

One of Tracey’s most significant legacies is the transformation of the Omeo Recreation Reserve. Through her vision, determination, and exceptional grant writing skills, the reserve has evolved into a vital community asset. Her ability to manage complex projects, coordinate contractors, work collaboratively with Council officers, and unite the community has delivered facilities that support sport, recreation, emergency response, and community connection.

Tracey has also held leadership roles across numerous organisations, including the Omeo Football and Netball Club, Tennis Club, Omeo Alpine Shears, the Omeo Medical Centre, and the Omeo Region Business and Tourism Association. From managing finances and administration to coordinating major events, she brings professionalism, innovation, and enthusiasm to everything she undertakes.

The Omeo Alpine Shears, now a much-loved feature of the Omeo Show, stands as a testament to Tracey’s ability to turn ideas into enduring community traditions. Her influence is also evident in the functionality of the Omeo Relief Centre, the success of community fundraising initiatives such as the Omeo Rodeo, and the ongoing vitality of local sporting groups.

Tracey leads not for recognition, but from a deep sense of care for her community and a genuine desire to see Omeo thrive. Her dedication, skill, and generosity of spirit have left an enduring mark on Omeo, ensuring it remains a connected, capable, and thriving place for generations to come.
