Looking after your onsite wastewater system

We're reminding property owners with onsite wastewater management systems to ensure their systems are installed correctly and maintained.

East Gippsland Shire Council is reminding property owners with onsite wastewater management systems to ensure their systems are installed correctly, maintained regularly and operating effectively.

Onsite wastewater management systems (OWMS) treat wastewater from properties that are not connected to a reticulated sewer system. Across East Gippsland, many rural properties rely on these systems to safely manage household wastewater.

Property owners must obtain approval from Council before installing a new system or undertaking works on an existing system. Council’s Environmental Health Officers inspect systems during installation to ensure permit requirements and EPA guidelines are met.

East Gippsland Shire Council Mayor Cr Jodie Ashworth said regular maintenance is essential to protect households, the environment and neighbouring properties.

“Looking after your onsite wastewater system helps prevent failures and ensures it continues operating safely and effectively,” Cr Ashworth said.

“Council is here to support property owners to better understand their systems and how to maintain them properly. Our Domestic Waste Water Technical Officer is available to speak with property owners, provide advice and help educate the community about their wastewater systems.”

Property owners are reminded to:

  • Have septic tanks pumped out at least every three years.
  • Aerated Wastewater Treatment Systems must be serviced by a qualified professional every three months.
  • Keep effluent disposal areas protected from vehicles and livestock.
  • Avoid putting fats, high nutrient detergents and sanitary products into the system.
  • Use water-saving practices where possible.

Owners should refer to their wastewater system manufacturer recommendations and permit conditions for specific maintenance requirements.

For advice before installing, altering or modifying an onsite wastewater system, or to speak with Council’s Domestic Waste Water Technical Officer, contact East Gippsland Shire Council’s Environmental Health team on 5153 9500.
