Council backs temporary camping site in Omeo following floods
Date of Issue:
January 28, 2022

After recent flood damage forced the temporary closure of the Omeo Caravan Park for clean-up and repair, East Gippsland Shire Council has backed the establishment of an interim camping site at the Omeo Recreation Reserve.

More than 120mm of rain hit the town on January 5 and 6, resulting in Livingstone Creek bursting its banks and damaging key park infrastructure.

The caravan park had been booked out until the end of January. At this stage the reopening date is yet to be determined.

As the caravan park represented about 50 percent of the accommodation available in Omeo, Council is supporting the Omeo Recreation Reserve Committee of Management in setting up Omeo Recreation Reserve as a suitable alternative until the caravan park can reopen. This will ensure the town can continue to attract and accommodate tourists to the town.

Mayor Cr Mark Reeves said the loss of the caravan park has come at a terrible time for the popular tourist town and gateway to the Alpine region.

“Council felt it was vital to support the local community in facilitating an alternative campsite to support local retailers and hospitality providers until the Omeo Caravan Park is operating again,” Cr Reeves said.

Camping at the Omeo Recreation Reserve is free. A donation box will be set up on site by the committee of management.
