Celebrating the unsung heroes of East Gippsland – National Volunteer Week 2026
Date of Issue:
May 20, 2026

This National Volunteer Week, East Gippsland Shire Council is recognising the contributions of volunteers and staff who help strengthen and support our communities.

Across our organisation and the wider region, volunteering is deeply embedded in everyday life. We’ve recently shared a series of volunteer spotlight stories, including many of our own staff who give their time beyond their roles – supporting CFA and emergency services, Learn to Drive programs, sporting clubs, and a range of local community organisations. Their contribution reflects a strong culture of service and community connection across East Gippsland.

This year, 47 outstanding volunteers were inducted into the East Gippsland Volunteer Honour Roll, joining a growing group of changemakers recognised for their exceptional service and dedication. Collectively, they have contributed more than 469 years of service – a remarkable legacy of community spirit.

Since its establishment in 2022, the Honour Roll has now recognised more than 300 volunteers from communities right across East Gippsland – from Mallacoota to Orbost, W Tree, Lakes Entrance, Bairnsdale, Buchan, Bruthen, Metung, Paynesville and beyond.

Among this year’s inductees is Paynesville local John Waller, who has given more than 50 years of service to the community. John currently volunteers with the Paynesville Lions Club and East Gippsland Legacy.

Reflecting on his experience, John said: “Join a club, join a volunteer group. Just help your community, volunteer.”

Each name on the Honour Roll represents a story of generosity, commitment and community connection.

Mayor Cr Jodie Ashworth said Volunteer Week is a timely reminder of the value volunteers bring to the region year-round.

“Volunteers are the lifeblood of our community – whether they’re supporting emergency services, aged care, environmental conservation or local sport. Their efforts make East Gippsland stronger, more connected and a better place to live.”

Nominations for the East Gippsland Volunteer Honour Roll are open year-round. If you know someone making a difference, we encourage you to help recognise their contribution.
