The much-awaited Bairnsdale Skate Park upgrade opened on October 26 last year and has been a hive of activity since.

Designed by Baseplate/EastbyWest, the skate park caters for all ages and skill levels, it includes a fully enclosed bowl, ‘street’ course with hips, banks, ledges, ramps and stairs, and conversion of the old concrete slab to an open plaza area.

Skate park construction specialist Grind Projects undertook the upgrade with the project being jointly funded by East Gippsland Shire Council and Sports Recreation Victoria.

Mayor Cr Mendy Urie said it’s great to be able to officially open the skate park in conjunction with a huge day of activities that showcase the great new facility.

“This project began with a fantastic example of Council and community collaboration. Youth ambassadors, interest groups, retailers and individuals worked in consultation with Council to submit design ideas," Cr Urie said.

"User group workshops were then held to give input into the concept designs. Grind Projects won the contract for the build and the results are now clear to see for everyone.”

Since opening, the skatepark has proved to be extremely popular with people of all ages. Following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, an official opening event with a competition that matches the occasion can now be held.

“This exciting project has created a regional skating hub to allow for competitions, improved safety and provide a space for fun and healthy activity for the town’s young people and skate, scooter, BMX and in-line skater community,” Cr Urie said.

“The Australia Skate Park League series holding a competition at this opening event really demonstrates what this project has achieved. The event offers something for the whole family with activities, games, live music and food vans. I encourage everyone to come down and check it out.”

The event is being delivered by Council in partnership with Headspace Bairnsdale and other agencies.
