Road naming proposal - Tower to Towner Street Marlo
Date of Issue:
May 4, 2022

The extended community is invited to provide feedback on this proposal to rename Tower Street in Marlo to Towner Street.

The location and extent of the road proposed to be renamed is shown below:

Council received a proposal to rename Tower Street to Towner Street from a member of the Towner family.  The proposal included extensive evidence in support of the name showing evidence that the road name had previously been known as Towner Street.

Council has investigated this matter and confirms that the road name is shown on the Marlo Township Map and Parish Plans recorded at the State Library of Victoria as Towner Street.  There is further evidence that the road name was known and displayed as Towner Street as recently as 1989.

There is a requirement to retain the historical significance of Towner Street as evidence indicates that the street was originally named after Charles William Towner who settled in Marlo in 1891.  Charles Towner was the engineer on the paddle steamer Curlip and the family home was one of the first to be built at Marlo, opposite the hotel and next to the home of the Jorgensen family.

Mr Towner also built the Marlo State School (No. 3433) on his property opposite the hotel in Argyle Street. The state school was opened in July 1902 and leased to the Education Department.

The above proposed road renaming adheres to the Naming rules for places in Victoria– Statutory requirements for naming roads, features and localities 2016 (the Naming Rules) and Australian New Zealand Standards for rural and urban addressing AS/NZS 4819:2011.

This proposal complies with the Naming rules for places in Victoria – Statutory requirements for naming roads, features and localities – 2016.

Affected property owners/ratepayers/occupiers are being consulted regarding the renaming proposal and Council will advertise the results of this consultation in due course.

Community members are invited to respond to this proposal before its formal consideration by the Registrar of Geographic Names Victoria.
