Domestic Wastewater

Under Part IXB of the Environment Protection Act 1970 a ‘Permit to install/alter a septic tank system’ must be obtained from the Shire before installing or altering any part of a septic tank system.


A ‘Permit to Use a Septic Tank System’ must then be issued before the system is used and an occupancy permit obtained.


All wastewater systems in unsewered areas (including septic tanks, treatment plants and composting toilets) require a permit.

A septic tank application form should be fully completed, signed and returned to Council with:

  • the relevant fee for either installation or alteration
  • a plan of the locality of the site
  • a site plan of the proposed installation
  • a copy of the land capability assessment report 
  • copy of certificate of conformity (Aerated wastewater system only) 

2018/2019 Fees:-  
Application to install a septic tank system $574.40
Application to alter a septic tank system $287.20
Application to install composting toilet $287.20
Renew permit to install $229.20
Search for septic tank plans   $23.00
