Library Collections

The library has something for everyone

In line with the library's commitment to lifelong learning, we have a large number of non-fiction titles including large print and biographies.

This popular collection includes classics, literary fiction and genre fiction such as crime, romance, thrillers and more. There are board books for babies, and picture books for children.

Reference collection:

Our reference items include dictionaries and encyclopedias, bibliographies and a variety of other reference materials. Because they are not for loan, reference items are always available to access in the library branches.

Film and music

There is a large DVD film collection which includes classic movies and documentaries. Compact discs covering all styles of music from classical to pop are also available.

Magazines and newspapers

The library subscribes to a variety of different magazines and newspapers which are available at each library branch.  There is also a collection of downloadable magazines.

eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines

Download electronic editions to your own device from Bolinda, Axis360 and Zinio.

Electronic resources

The library subscribes to a range of electronic resources which members can access from home and from the public access PCs in our library branches.

Special collections

Biographies are shelved separately for easy browsing.

Book Club sets of eight:

Selected fiction and non-fiction titles are available as sets of eight copies for loan to book clubs.  A special membership application is required from one member of the club in order to borrow the set.  Although the sets are not available to individual memberships, single copies of most titles are available in our lending collections.

Gender Equality Resources

East Gippsland Shire Libraries have a selection of gender equality resources suitable for children. These resources provide useful ways for parents and educators to introduce gender equality to children from a young age. Educators can also borrow a Gender Equality Resource Kit. The Gender Equality Resource Kit contains books, information and lesson plans that can be used by educators in their classrooms.

Giant Books and Puppet Kits:

This collection is available for loan by community based organisational members including schools and childcare centres. The collection includes book and puppet kits, giant books, traditional puppet kits and nursery rhyme puppet kits.

Graphic novels:

This collection includes traditional and contemporary comics, and Manga.

Large print:

This collection is mostly used by people who have difficulty reading print of standard size.

Local history collection:

This collection contains printed material of social and historical significance to East Gippsland. Although the local history collection is located at Bairnsdale Library, items can be requested for viewing at other branches.

Parenting collection:

Parenting resources provide useful information (in print, DVD and pamphlet format) for parents and caregivers on various aspects of parenting. It includes material that will help your child in day-to-day activities and help you answer tricky questions like "What's happening to my body?", "Where do babies come from?", "Does Dad still love me even though you got divorced?”  The collection also includes easy to share information on topics such as "Going to the hospital" or "Bullying".

Power-Mate meters:

Find out what your power usage is costing you and the environment. Borrow a Power-Mate from the East Gippsland Shire Council Libraries and find out.

The Power-Mate is a hand-held meter which can be connected to any electronic appliance and measures the power in watts, voltage and current. The meter can also tell you: the cost of running the appliance, how much energy the appliance used in kilowatt-hours and how many kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions it produced. Just ask your library staff for Power-Mate, or search for Power-Mate on the library catalogue.

Talking books:

Books recorded either on compact disc, in MP3 format or in electronic format downloadable to your computer or other device. They are popular with people who would like listening to books being read or who have a visual impairment.

Westerns (cowboys):

In both large print and regular fiction, the westerns are shelved separately for easy browsing.
