A safer streetscape for Orbost

Monday 13 February

Stage One of the Orbost Streetscape project will begin in late April, after Easter.

At its February meeting, East Gippsland Shire Council awarded the contract for the works to JW & AG Volk Pty Ltd to the value of $695,823.52.

Stage One focuses on the western side of Nicholson Street, from McLeod to Salisbury Streets.

The project will enhance the town centre’s rural character, creating a safer and more pedestrian-friendly area.

Council will undertake the works in stages to minimise disruption.

The community was involved in the design of the new streetscape, with consultation undertaken last year.

Mayor Cr Joe Rettino said council will continue to work with the community on the project.

“We will engage with businesses, land owners and the wider community before we finalise the works schedule and will accommodate their particular needs, wherever possible,” Cr Rettino said.

“This is an exciting project for Orbost. Council has successfully re-energised the public spaces in central business districts in Bairnsdale and Paynesville in recent years, so I look forward to seeing the transformation in Orbost.”

The construction team will demolish and reconstruct the footpath, build retaining walls and undertake drainage and kerb works. The project includes removal and planting of new trees and the installation of modern street furniture.

Anyone wanting to receive updates on the project can register for the Orbost Connect e-newsletter.
