Food and Agriculture

East Gippsland's Food Vision

East Gippsland is a source of high value healthy foods which through collaboration, innovation, sustainable practices, effective marketing and distribution to local, national and global markets, will strengthen the region’s economic development and social wellbeing.


East Gippsland has an incredible abundance of fresh local produce: fruit & vegetables, beef, lamb, seafood, milk, cream, eggs and nuts which are all grown in this diverse produce growing region. With its fertile soils, good rainfall and temperate climate, East Gippsland is a food bowl for Australia, producing fresh fruit and vegetables all year round.


The region is also renowned for its quality Gippsland beef and excellent seafood.  Having a plentiful supply of fresh fruit and vegetables, the region also produces quality wines, beer, olives and olive oil, chocolate, beef and condiments.

Our Food Framework

The East Gippsland Food Framework was established by Council and other partners to identify current food produce initiatives in the region to help ensure that all partners work together to maximise our resources and deliver the best value for industry and the region.


The Framework will assist in Government policy and direction and highlights the importance of East Gippsland's agribusiness sector. The Framework objectives and strategies fit with the Council Plan and will provide support for industry in East Gippsland. 


Other benefits of establishing a Food Framework are to:

  • Identify the drivers and enablers of the food system and how these are being supported;
  • Identify and communicate current projects;
  • Highlight gaps that could help in identifying future new projects; and
  • Enable new projects to align, leverage and collaborate with current projects.


Food Cluster

The East Gippsland Food Cluster Inc. is a not for profit organisation that pursues; 

  • Sustainably growing the East Gippsland Food Sector;
  • Explores opportunities to improve productivity through innovation and supply chain synergies amongst our members and other regional enterprises; and
  • Develop's a workforce capability to support the sector and promote industry excellence.

Food Brand

East Gippsland Marketing Inc. (EGMI) and the East Gippsland Food Cluster are working collaboratively to develop a regional produce brand that recognises the strengths of our food and beverage sector and is synonymous with great taste and excellent quality.

A range of marketing activities will be rolled out over the next four years to promote our produce strengths, and create lasting relationships with consumers, restaurateurs and suppliers.


Last year EGMI and the food cluster hosted high profile chefs and media commentators in the region including Frank Camorra (MoVida), Matt Germanchis (Pei Modern) and Matt Wilkinson (Pope Joan / Hams & Bacon). All were impressed at the quality and diversity of the produce, and have continued a close working relationship with the food cluster.
