The East Gippsland Rail Trail is an off-road pathway which mostly follows the route of the former railway line between Bairnsdale and Orbost, via Nicholson, Bruthen and Nowa Nowa. It officially ends at Burn Road, Newmerella, with a shared pathway access to Orbost.

The trail is managed by a community volunteer committee, and for the Bruthen town precinct by the EG Shire (except the Tambo River bridge), under the terms of the Crown Lands (Reserves) Act 1978, and public land management provisions of DELWP.

It is open 24/7, at no charge for walking, cycling and horse riding. Motor vehicles and trail bikes (unless as authorised management  vehicles) are prohibited on the trail Reserve.

An information brochure is available at Visitor information Centres and from the web site.

The trail committee is assisted by the volunteer Friends of the EGRT Association.
