Witt Street renaming proposal

Background

Ambulance Victoria have identified a priority emergency responder & public safety issue.

Beveridges Road is a non-contiguous road made up of three separate sections. This causes confusion in emergency situations and causes delays in response time.

Renaming a section of road and re-addressing another section of road will eliminate this issue.

Council received a request from Ambulance Victoria to amend sections of Beveridges Road to allow for logical addressing and reduce confusion for emergency responders. Beveridges Road is divided into three separate sections of road causing confusion for emergency responders and other service providers.

The Australian/New Zealand Standard for Rural and Urbane Addressing –Section 4.2.4

-      Contiguous Navigable Road: A named road shall include only one section navigable by vehicles. Unconnected navigable sections shall be assigned separate road names.

Council investigated this matter and concluded that the logical solution is to.

1.    Address properties on the middle section of Beveridges road to the roads/streets that actually provide access to the properties.

2.    Rename the shortest (southern) section of Beveridges Road. The southern section of road has 4 properties addressed to it, compared to 27 property addresses on the northern section of road.

Property owners were presented with two potential road names from council’s road name database, and Witt Street proved to be the most popular name.

Karl Witt was born in Cunningham (now Lakes Entrance) in November 1894,where he became a schoolteacher.  After returning from military service in World War One, Karl became a founding member of the Lakes Entrance RSL Sub-Branch.

The Witt family have had generations of involvement the local area, including school teaching, working on the steamers that brought supplies to the area, and running popular businesses. Descendants of the Witt family still live in the Lakes Entrance area and other surrounding towns.

The above proposed road renaming adheres to the Naming rules for places in Victoria– Statutory requirements for naming roads, features and localities 2022 (the Naming Rules) and Australian New Zealand Standard for rural and urban addressing AS/NZS 4819:2011.
