Bairnsdale Landfill Cell 4

Construction of the next landfill cell is underway.
A new landfill cell is required every 2 - 3 years, but Cell 4 has been needed sooner because of the extensive amount of waste disposed of during bushfire clean-up activities.

This project will implement the vision of the Bullock Island Master, updated in 2020. Elements of the project include:

  • Updated access roads and parking facilities
  • Fishing platforms and boardwalks
  • Picnic and BBQ facilities
  • Walkways, for use by both pedestrian and cycling
  • Public ablution facilities
  • Artful interpretation of a parkland area in a natural setting

This project is jointly funded by Council, State Government and Commonwealth Government.

Eagle Point Foreshore Hub

In conjunction with an upgrade of public land next to the foreshore, the project will create a community and visitor hub including a network of walking paths, landscaping, playgrounds and a multipurpose lake house building offering mixed-use community and commercial functions.

Following the loss of the Genoa Heritage Truss Bridge in the Black Summer Fires, a new pedestrian bridge is being built on the original alignment. The look of the replacement bridge is in keeping with the original, including its truss spans.

The project replaces the bridge to Bullock Island, Lakes Entrance, which is needed due to corrosion of the bridge causing structural deterioration.
The new bridge, designed for the marine environment, will cater for the island's commercial needs and provide greater access for community members. The bridge will have a shared walking and cycling path and new paths will be built on Bullock Island.
This project is jointly funded with the Australian Government.

Lakes Entrance Landfill has reached its capacity. The project includes capping and rehabilitating the landfill, based on an EPA-approved design. As part of the project, the transfer station will be brought up to best practice standards to ensure the facility continues to provide for the Lakes Entrance community. More bays will be built along with improved recycling facilities. Other improvements to the site will include access roads, hardstand areas and drainage works.

In partnership with Regional Roads Victoria, major streetscaping improvements are being implemented along the length of the Esplanade in Lakes Entrance, including the upgrade of footpaths, lighting, street furniture, artwork and landscaping.

This project upgraded the seawall on the foreshore next to the Mallacoota Foreshore Holiday Park and provides increased protection from inundation. Stage 1 was a 200-metre section next to Panoramic Drive. Further stages will be completed in 2021-22.

The Omeo Mountain Bike Destination project includes construction of a nationally significant 120 km+ mountain bike trail network on the doorstep of town.


Stage 1 comprises the construction of 55 km of trails identified as 'high priority' within the Omeo Mountain Bike Trail Network Master Plan, a Pump Track and Skills course (completed) in Livingstone Park and supporting infrastructure.

The stage 1 trails are proposed to be progressively opened to the public mid 2023 onwards, with dates to be confirmed.


Jointly funded with Australian and Victorian governments.

Three sections of Omeo Valley Road in poor condition are being reconstructed, totalling 2.7 km.
A 1 km section of Limestone Road has also been reconstructed. This project is jointly funded with Council and the Roads to Recovery Program, Australian Government.

The project will upgrade the length of Moroney Street in Bairnsdale between Dawson Street and Riley Street over multiple stages. The upgrade includes full road construction, replacing open drains with kerb and channel and underground drains, footpaths, indented parking lanes, tree planting and upgrading all intersections along the street.

The staged construction works will be as follows:

  • Dawson Street to McKean Street
  • McKean Street to Birchwood Court
  • Birchwood Court to Riley Street

This project is jointly funded with the Roads to Recovery Program, Australian Government.

Located on the site of the netball and hockey facilities in West Bairnsdale, the WORLD redevelopment will provide regional level sporting facilities for East Gippsland. An outcome of the Bairnsdale Sporting Facilities Master Plan, the WORLD redevelopment will provide:

  • An upgraded pavilion for hockey and netball user groups
  • New lighting and amenities for the main hockey pitch
  • Renewal of the hockey pitch
  • An eight-court regional level netball facility. Four courts will be marked for both futsal and netball
  • A soccer precinct that includes a dedicated pavilion and two pitches with lighting
  • Car parking
  • New walkways and connections to the Bairnsdale Aquatic and Recreation Centre and Bairnsdale Secondary College.

This project is jointly funded by Council, Victorian Government and Australian Government.
