Waste Management Facilities

Landfills

Council manages and operates eight landfill sites located throughout the shire.

Landfills are used for the disposal of both commercial and domestic waste, and once our ‘rubbish’ goes in there we can no longer reuse that site. All household waste (red-lidded bin) collected in the kerbside service is disposed of at the nearest landfill site. Landfills are also used by commercial operators and local residents who do not receive a Council provided or commercial collection.

Most types of waste will be accepted at landfill sites, excluding liquid and hazardous wastes. If you are unsure if your waste will be accepted at a landfill site, please contact your local landfill directly or Council.

Transfer Stations

Council manages and operates 13 transfer stations throughout the region. Transfer stations are set up as a central point for residents to dispose of most types of waste in an easy and effective manner. They are set up so that all waste is separated into types of materials, to enable recycling and reuse of as much material as possible.

All recyclables can be disposed of at these sites free of charge including plastics coded 1 – 5, glass, aluminium cans, steel cans and scrap metals. Disposal of all other non recyclable waste will be charged a gate fee, however no liquid or hazardous waste is accepted at these sites. Green waste less than 30cm in diameter is free.

If you are unsure of the disposal method required for any materials or want to clarify if your waste will be accepted at a transfer station, please contact your local site direct or Council's Waste Unit.

Transfer Trailerstransfertrailerjpg.jpg

Council manages 13 Transfer Trailers throughout the region. Transfer trailers are available for residents who live in remote areas as a drop off point for their household waste. Only domestic waste is accepted in these trailers. No hazardous or liquid waste may be disposed of in transfer trailers.

These trailers are serviced regularly which involves a contractor towing the full trailer to the nearest transfer station or landfill and disposing of the waste contained inside. The trailer is then towed back to its designated located to be available again for local residents to use.

Why Sort My Load?

Transfer Stations are set up so you can drop off your recyclable waste first, then dispose of your remaining rubbish. Sorting your load at home means you can save time and effort at the transfer station, and you could also save money. By loading your trailer or ute correctly, you will make the most out of the recycling facilities before you head to the rubbish disposal area.

The Right Way to Load

When you start to load your waste, keep the same materials together in piles on your trailer or ute. Neat piles of green waste, timber and bricks on the sides and scrap metal on the top and any left over rubbish at the rear of your load will ensure that you can move from bay to bay and recycle your load first, then drop off you rubbish last.

Safety is important when visiting a transfer station. If your load has been sorted it will be much safer for you to dispose of your materials at the designated drop off points.  Securing your load with a net, tie down straps or ropes is essential before you head off to the transfer station.

The Wrong Way to Load

If you throw everything onto your trailer or ute it will be very hard to separate out recyclable items from your rubbish. You may then be tempted to throw everything into the rubbish collection point, rather than recycling. You will also be charged for the disposal of an unsorted load.

If you haven’t sorted your load, it can be time consuming to go backwards and forwards across the site, to dispose of your different recyclables.

Secure Your Load

Driving to the site with your load unsecured is a serious problem and is an offence against the Road Safety Act 1986. You can be fined for littering if items from your load are blown onto the road or roadside area. Fines for littering from unsecured loads can range from $170 to $500.

Large unsecured items could also cause a serious accident if they fall onto the road.

Next time you are preparing to head out to your local resource recovery centre, make sure you “Get It Sorted.” For further information about your local transfer station contact Council or your local facility.
