Announcement good for economy and industry

Friday 11 August

East Gippsland Shire Council has welcomed today’s announcement that the Australian Fisheries Management Authority's (AFMA) Southern and Eastern Shark and Scalefish Fisheries (SESSF) management team will be relocated to Lakes Entrance.

Mayor, Cr Joe Rettino, said Council has advocated for the move both individually and collectively through the Gippsland Local Government Network.

“We strongly support any consideration to relocate Government bodies to East Gippsland, and earlier this year we endorsed the SESSF team as an ideal candidate to relocate to Lakes Entrance,” Cr Rettino said.

“An AFMA Industry Liaison Officer has been based in Lakes Entrance as a trial for the past two years and there have been significant fishery management outcomes reported from this arrangement.

“It also makes sense that an organisation that manages fisheries is based in a coastal location, rather than an office in Canberra.

“I am advised that up to six staff will be based at the new office in 2018, which is a great outcome for our region’s economy and the fishing industry,” Cr Rettino concluded.
