Major Projects in the Region
East Gippsland is a large growing and diverse region with lots going on. As such there are a range of major projects underway in the region, injecting significant investment, new infrastructure and new opportunities into the region’s economy.
Mining Industry Briefing
In March, Council hosted a mining industry briefing held at the Belleview on the Lake in Lakes Entrance, a number of key note speakers informed Councillors, senior managers and local business representatives about current mining interests in East Gippsland. The meeting was well received and enabled mining organisations to meet with local suppliers and hear from State Government’s, Earth Resources unit.

Energy to the Regions Project
To complement existing reticulated gas in Bairnsdale and Paynesville, at least two more of East Gippsland’s towns will be connected to reticulated natural gas as part of a $100 million State Government pledge to provide natural gas to 12 Victorian towns. Lakes Entrance and Orbost are two of the identified towns. No timeframe has yet been announced. See more information about the Energy to the Regions Project.
Trade Training Centres
The $10 million program helps to improve year 12 retention rates and enhance students’ pathways to vocational careers by offering students from years nine to 12 access vocational education and training through trade training centres. Trade training centres also help to address national skills shortages in traditional trades and emerging industries. East Gippsland Secondary Colleges have identified three key areas of skills needs:
- Food sector
- Civil engineering and construction
- Allied Health
Stockman Mine Project
A Western Australian company, Independence Group, is currently seeking the necessary approvals to establish a copper and zinc mine near Benambra. Once approved the project will generate significant job growth and economic activity for the region.
East Gippsland has substantial mineral sands deposits and several mining companies, including Metallica Minerals, Iluka Resources and Oarsome Australia are currently undertaking exploration works.
One of the region’s largest vegetable production and logistics companies, Bonnacord Ingram is establishing a transport hub incorporating cool-room storage, washing and maintenance and office facilities. There will also be a vegetable processing and value-adding facility. This investment is estimated at $2.5 million.
